How to Make Coloring a Fun and Engaging Experience

When I color with my kids, I like to turn it into a conversation.

It’s not just about filling in the page—it’s about exploring, asking questions, and using our imagination.

I’ve found that when we slow down and really talk about what we’re coloring, it makes the experience so much more fun and meaningful.

So if you’re coloring with your kids, or even just on your own, here’s something you can try.

Use the coloring page as a starting point for a conversation.

Ask questions, look up pictures, and get curious.

And most of all—be patient!

Kids will come up with the wildest, most creative ideas, and that’s the best part.

Here’s an example of how a coloring session with my kids might go:

Let’s Talk About Sloths While We Color!

Alright, we’ve got our pages!

I’ve never seen a sloth in real life before, have you? What do you think they look like?

When I color with you guys, I like to look up pictures of the real animal first.

Let’s pull one up—see how its fur looks?

It looks kind of rough, but also fluffy.

What do you think it would feel like if you touched it? Soft? Scratchy? Maybe a little fuzzy?

Now, let’s talk about color.

What color do you think sloths are?

They can be brown, gray, or even greenish because algae grows on their fur!

That’s kind of weird, right?

But it actually helps them blend into the trees where they live.

So, are we going to make our sloth look realistic, or are we going with a fun color, like blue or purple?

Sloths also move really, really slow. Can you try moving like a sloth? (Go ahead, I’ll wait.)

See how much patience that takes?

That’s kind of their whole thing—they take their time.

Maybe we can learn something from them about slowing down and being patient, too.

Oh! And did you know sloths make sounds?

They have this little squeaky noise.

Let’s look up a video and listen to what they sound like.

What do you think a sloth’s voice would sound like if it could talk?

Coloring is more than just filling in a page.

It’s a chance to learn, to talk, and to have fun together. So, what colors are we using for our sloth today?

So, next time you’re coloring, try this out! Take a few moments to really engage, ask questions, and let kids use their imagination.

You might be surprised at the conversations that come from something as simple as a cute sloth coloring page!

Biblical Lessons from Sloths: Patience and Trust in God

Sloths are a great example of patience. They don’t rush, they don’t stress, and they take life one slow step at a time.

This ties beautifully into Ecclesiastes 3:1, which says, to everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.

You can use sloth coloring pages to create a biblical discussion on patience and trusting God’s timing:

Illustrate God’s Timing: As sloths move slowly and deliberately, we can be reminded that God’s plans in His perfect time.
Encourage kids to think of a time they had to be patient and how it turned out.

A Reminder to Rest: Sloths spend much of their time resting, which can remind us of the importance of Sabbath and trusting in God’s provision.

Just as sloths don’t rush through life, we, too, can trust that God has everything in control.

Slow and Steady Faith: Faith is not a race it’s a journey.

Just like sloths move one careful step at a time, we can take small steps each day in our faith journey, knowing that God is guiding us.

Fun Sloth Facts to Share with Kids

  1. Sloths are so slow that algae grow on their fur! That greenish tint? It’s nature’s camouflage!
  2. They only go to the bathroom once a week. Imagine having a bathroom schedule like that!
  3. Sloths are great swimmers. Even though they move slowly on land, they can glide through water like pros!
